The first annual John T. Schroeder award was presented on June 3rd of 2007 at the Princeton University Men's Lacrosse end-of-season brunch by the members of the Class of 1992 Men's Lacrosse team. The first year of the program raised $28,050 in a very short time to endow the award so that each year one Tiger player will be honored in John's name.
At the intitial presentation all but one of the teammates that graduated with John, as well as Andy Moe, was present for the brunch. Many had traveled great distances and made sacrifices in order to be there. The award was introduced at the end of the ceremony by Coach Tierney, Mike Marinara, and Andy Moe who spoke about John and the significance of the award.
They each spoke of specific instance, both on the field and off, that were priceless to the success of the team. “Sauce”, who played the same position as John, told us how as they passed through their four years, John’s playing time got lesser as Sauce played more, and never once did John have any resentment and their friendship was never effected, John having nothing but support for Sauce.
Andy Moe spoke of his first encounter with the long stick-man from Long Island who was firing rockets at shooting practice. Coach Tierney articulated his genuine and unique character and heart that is unmatched and unforgettable. Our father said a few words about the home away from home that Princeton became and the family that the Tigers became not only for John but for all of us.
